Shire welcomes major roads funding election commitment

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has welcomed the announcement that a re-elected Cook Labor Government will commit $17 million towards upgrading key intersections in the Shire.

The funding would allow the Shire to build roundabouts at the intersections of Kargotich Road with Abernethy Road, Orton Road and Gossage Road.

The Shire’s local roads are coming under increasing pressure from residential development, and the $1 billion Tonkin Highway extension is set to bring more heavy traffic to the area.

Shire President Rob Coales welcomed the announcement from the WA Labor Party.

“These are the top three road priorities the Shire has been advocating for, so we are very happy with the announcement,” Shire President Rob Coales said.

“The Shire has prioritised these three intersections along Kargotich Road for upgrading based on crash data, current and future traffic volumes, road condition and future growth and development in the area.

“Improving the standard of our local roads is our community’s number one priority. The funding would help the Shire continue our journey of improving our local road network and keeping our community safe.”

The Shire is now calling on the WA Liberal Party and WA National Party to match this funding to the Shire’s roads.

The Shire will also be approaching candidates in the upcoming Federal Government election to match this funding commitment to increase the number of roads which can be improved.
