All about waste - Waste Transfer Station Update

After careful consideration Council has decided to reopen the Watkins Road Waste Transfer Station (WTS).

However, before we can reopen, we must complete essential site remediation and secure approval from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER). We also need to redesign the site, seek independent approvals and complete the works. We anticipate this process will take approximately 21-24 months before the site can safely reopen to the public.

What will the WTS accept?

Once reopened, the station will accept:

  • Green waste (1 pass - 5m3)
  • Bulk waste (1 pass - 3m3) - You can swap your bulk waste pass for an additional green waste pass if preferred
  • Unlimited metals.

These Waste Transfer Station allowances are in addition to:

  • 2 scheduled green waste verge collections per year - learn more by clicking here.
  • 2 bookable hard waste verge collections (3m³ each) - learn more by clicking here and book your next FREE service.

Why does this matter?

We know this is the number one issue for our community, and we understand how important it is to have reliable waste services. While the process of securing approvals and redeveloping the site will take time, our priority is to deliver a solution that meets your expectations and ensures the site's long-term safety.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work towards reopening the Watkins Road Waste Transfer Station.

FAQ

When will the Watkins Road Waste Transfer Station reopen?

The remediation, redesign, approvals, construction, and capital purchases will take 21 to 24 months to complete and are dependent on relevant approvals from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER).

Where can I take my green waste in the meantime?

Scheduled green waste collections are in place. The next collections will take occur in April and October 2025.  Find out more here.

What can I do with my hard waste in the meantime?

The Shire introduced bookable hard waste collections for all residents in June 2024. Your first two allowances will expire in May 2025. Please make sure to get in early and make your booking by clicking here.  From 1 June, all residents will then have two hard waste bulk collections available to them for the next year.

How many times can I go to the WTS once it reopens?

Every household will receive:

  • 1 green waste pass up to 5m3
  • 1 bulk waste pass of up to 3m3 - this can be swapped for an additional green waste pass
  • Unlimited metals drop-offs.

The intention is to make these passes digitally available at the Waste Transfer Station. Proof of a residential address in the Shire will be required.

Will there be a Reuse Shop?

No. A Reuse shop is not included in the current plan approved by Council.

What other options does the Shire offer for managing green waste and organics?

Residents can access a rebate for purchasing up to two of five composting options. Find out everything you need to know here

Is this offer for all residents or do I need to own property?

All residents within the Shire can access these services, regardless of property ownership. This means that if a house is tenanted, the tenants living in the Shire will get to use these services. Proof of a residential address in the Shire will be required.

How and when will I receive my free passes?

As the reopening approaches, the Shire will provide clear communication to residents about how to access and use the services of the Waste Transfer Station.

Will free mulch still be available?

No. Due to limited space, green waste will be stored in skip bins and transported off-site for chipping and mulching, which means free mulch will not be available.

Can I have a refund on my rates?

While the Shire plans for the reopening, any surplus funds from the waste fees will be allocated towards the capital for reopening the Waste Transfer Station.
