Decommissioning of a septic system
In and around Byford, the provision of a reticulated sewerage system by the Water Corporation will make many septic systems and on-site disposal systems obsolete. When you connect your premises to the sewerage system, regulations require the existing sewage disposal system to be decommissioned.
How to decommission an existing septic system
- Tanks should be emptied in accordance with the Environmental Protection (Liquid Waste) Regulations 1996. This requires the services of a licensed liquid waste contractor. Names of such contractors are available from the Yellow Pages under Septic Tank Cleaning Services.
- The septic tanks and leach drains may be removed or, where this is not practicable, they may be broken in situ and back-filled with clean fill.
