In accordance with the Serpentine and Jarrahdale Cemeteries Local Law 2005 the Shire strives to maintain a community focus by conserving the historical links of the area for local families.

The Shire manages and maintains two cemeteries, Serpentine and Jarrahdale, which both offer picturesque rural character with the option for burials or ashes placement.

The Shire is committed to the management and administration of our cemeteries to ensure that all processes are delivered in a safer manner and follow industry best practice and standards.

Appointments

To discuss a burial or ashes placement with a Shire Officer, please contact Customer Service on 08 9526 1111 to book an appointment. Shire officers will not be able to accommodate walk-in enquiries at this time. 

Burials

To organise a funeral, please contact a funeral director who can assist you throughout the process and who can liaise with the Shire on your behalf. In accordance with Serpentine and Jarrahdale Cemeteries Local Law 2005, the Shire requires at least two (2) working days’ notice to prepare a burial plot within our cemeteries.

The preferred burial times are Tuesday to Friday between 8am and 11am. Burials required outside of the provided timeframe may incur additional fees.

The Shire does not accept reservations for burial plots.

Ashes

The interment of ashes refers to the process where cremated remains are placed in a permanent resting place.
Ashes can be placed at either Serpentine or Jarrahdale cemetery between Monday – Friday, from 8:30am to 2:30pm, by Shire officers or applicants.

Ashes can be placed within an existing grave if permission is given from the ‘Grant of Right of Burial’ holder. Ashes cannot be placed by family members and will require the assistance of the Shire.

Cemetery Records

The Shire is to be advised of any burials or interment of ashes so that we can map the location and record the information within our registers. If you have any queries regarding a cemetery record, please contact the Shire.

Fees and Charges

Fees and charges are determined by the Council and are published in the Schedule of Fees and Charges available on our website. Fees are payable at the time specified in the schedule.

Cemetery Maintenance

Preservation of the natural rural character that is exhibited within our cemeteries is of great importance to the Shire. Fortnightly maintenance and ad-hoc tasks ensure that the area in a maintained condition for the community. Tasks include:

  • Removal of hazards and leaf litter around key pedestrian areas,
  • Arbor maintenance tasks such as tree pruning.
  • Emptying of supplied bins as per the schedule.
