Getting on with the job - work to start on Kargotich and Orton Roads

Published on Wednesday, 22 January 2025 at 11:06:42 AM

Major upgrades to Kargotich and Orton Roads are set to begin, promising a smoother and safer journey for motorists in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.

These improvements are the final part of the Shire’s Hypergrowth Roads Program, made possible by $18 million in election commitment funding from the State Government, in 2021.

The program has already delivered significant upgrades, including enhancements to Soldiers Road and improved roundabouts at the Keirnan Street and Cardup Siding Road intersections. Additionally, a section of Kargotich Road between Rowley and Thomas Roads has been upgraded.

The upcoming works will focus on substantial improvements to Kargotich and Orton Roads. Planned upgrades include:

  • Improved drainage systems
  • Pavement resurfacing
  • Road widening to enhance safety and traffic flow

To accommodate the work, road closures will be in place:

  • Kargotich Road, between Thomas and Orton Roads
  • Orton Road, between Kargotich and Hopkinson Roads

These sections will be closed from 3 February, with completion expected by the end of May.

Comments attributable to Hugh Jones, Member for Darling Range

“With works complete along Kargotich and Soldiers Roads, these upgrades mark the final stretch in the SJ Shire’s Hypergrowth Roads Program and bring my $18 million election commitment for key road safety improvements closer to the finish line.

“This critical program is delivering wider roads, improved footpaths and intersections and a safer journey for residents and visitors in our community.”

Comments attributable to Shire President Rob Coales

“We know that many roads in SJ are not up to standard, and with the Tonkin Highway extension set to bring more traffic to the Shire, it’s essential that we make urgent improvements.

“These works are part of the Shire getting the job done by upgrading key roads, ensuring they are as safe as possible for locals and visitors.

“Although unfortunate, road closures are absolutely necessary to get this work done, and I thank residents, particularly those living in the immediate vicinity, for their patience.

“On behalf of our community, I’d like to thank Member for Darling Range Hugh Jones MLA and the State Government for their ongoing support of projects and programs that support our Shire’s growth.”
