As the weather warms up, snakes are becoming more active. Residents are reminded to stay vigilant and take precautions to avoid unwanted encounters with these reptiles. Here’s what you can do and who to call if you spot a snake around your property.
Why Are Snakes Active?
Spring and summer mark the peak activity periods for snakes as they emerge from brumation (a type of hibernation) to search for food and mates. Common species in the area include the dugite, tiger snake, and, in certain parts of the Shire, the death adder. All three species can be dangerous if provoked and should always be treated with caution.
How to Stay Safe
- Around Your Property: Keep grass short, remove debris, and clear piles of timber or rocks where snakes may hide.
- Out and About: Be mindful in bushland, grassy areas, and near water. Wear enclosed shoes and take care when moving objects on the ground, as these can be hiding spots for snakes.
- Supervise Pets and Children: Keep pets on leads during walks and teach kids to avoid approaching or provoking snakes.
If You See a Snake
- Stay calm and slowly move away.

- Never attempt to catch or kill a snake
In Case of a Bite
- Apply a pressure bandage and keep the person as still as possible while awaiting medical help.
Snakes Are Protected
Remember, all snakes in Western Australia are protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950. It is illegal to harm them. These reptiles play an important role in controlling pests and maintaining ecological balance.
