Shire Announces Inaugural SJ Remembers Community History Awards Winners

The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale has announced the winners of the inaugural SJ Remembers Community History Awards. These awards celebrate the region's rich history and recognise community members who have preserved and shared Serpentine Jarrahdale's diverse heritage.

Shire President Rob Coales expressed his admiration for the participants saying the SJ Remembers Community History Awards have given us an opportunity to connect with our past and acknowledge those who have dedicated themselves to preserving it. Each submission was a testament to the rich tapestry of stories that make up our community’s heritage.

Winners and Categories:

  • Oral History:
    • Winner: Ron Chapman for Robert (Rob) Smith’s recollections of life in Jarrahdale during the early 1960s and his work in the town’s timber mill.
  • Written Memoir:
    • Winner: Ada Fawcett for "Life as a Child in the Years 1933 - 1949."
    • Runners-Up: Athol Wigg for "Memories 1951" and Heather Moorhead for "Memories of the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale."
  • Original Research:
    • Winner: Jen Phillips for "Jarrahdale’s Pirate – The Story of Basilo De Los Santos."
    • Runner-Up: Dianne Mount for "Serpentine Jarrahdale Community Resource Centre."
  • Photographic Memory (pre-2000):
    • Winner: Joan Miller for "Byford’s First Swimming Pool."
    • Runner-Up: Patricia Lording for various aspects of Byford life in the 1960s.
  • Jan Skillington Award:
    • Awarded to: Ron Chapman
