After thorough consideration, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale Council has decided to reopen the Watkins Road Waste Transfer Station (WTS), addressing a key concern for the local community.
The reopening will occur once essential site remediation is completed and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) grants final approval. This step ensures the site's long-term safety and environmental compliance. The remediation, redesign, approvals, construction, and capital purchases will take 21 to 24 months to complete and are dependent on relevant approvals from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER).
What Waste Will Be Accepted?
Upon reopening, the WTS will accept:
- Green Waste: 1 pass for up to 5m³
- Bulk Waste: 1 pass for up to 3m³ (with the option to swap for an additional green waste pass)
- Unlimited Metals: No restrictions on metal waste disposal.
These allowances are in addition to existing services:
- Two scheduled green waste verge collections annually
- Two bookable hard waste verge collections (3m³ each) annually.
Residents can learn more about these services and book their next free collection through the Shire's website.
Why This Matters
Reliable waste services are a top priority for our community. The Council acknowledges the inconvenience caused during the WTS closure and appreciates residents' patience. While the process of securing approvals and site redevelopment will take time, the Council is committed to delivering a solution that meets community expectations and upholds environmental safety standards.
