Dust and Sand Drift Complaints
Dust and Sand Drift affects many residents throughout the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale from subdivision works, vacant lots and building sites. Residents are expected to receive some dust and sand when living in close proximity to building sites and subdivisions. However, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s Dust and Building Waste Local Law 2017 sets out requirements to reduce the impact of dust and sand on surrounding residents.
Actions you can take for sand and dust complaints from vacant lots:
- Contact the Shire’s Environmental health Officers on 9526 1111 or to info@sjshire.wa.gov.au and inform them of the issue.
Actions you can take for sand and dust complaints from building sites:
- Speak to the Builders on the construction site to make them aware of your concerns.
- Contact the building company who is managing the construction site and ask the building company to contact you once they consider appropriate measures.
- If the dust and sand drift continues, then you may contact the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale Environmental Health Officers to provide assistance.

Dust Management Plans
If you own or occupy land in the Shire and are intending to undertake any works that have the potential to create dust, you will need to submit a Dust Management Application along with your Dust Management Plan to the Shire. This Plan must be approved before any works begin.
Our Environmental Health Officers will assess this application and the supporting Dust Management Plan prior to issuing the company with an approval for the works. Please note that a Construction Noise and Vibration Management Plan may also be required to be submitted with the Dust Management plan. Please see further information for Noise Management plans.
