Volunteers needed to protect Brickwood Reserve’s precious ecosystem

The Friends of Brickwood Reserve are calling on community members to join their mission to preserve one of Byford’s most unique and endangered natural habitats.

Volunteers are needed to assist with important tasks, like weeding, rubbish removal, plant identification, and wildlife monitoring.

Brickwood Reserve is home to three distinct vegetation complexes: Marri woodland, Banksia woodland, and wetland. Its critically endangered Marri Woodland is the largest of its kind in the world, alongside unique species like Kingia and Grasstrees.

Who are the Friends of Brickwood?
For over 30 years, dedicated locals Eileen Davis and Karl Titelius, founders of the Friends of Brickwood Reserve, have worked tirelessly to protect this vital ecosystem.

With the support of the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, they have combated invasive weeds like Watsonia and wild oats, while also monitoring the reserve’s health and collecting rubbish.

Shire President Rob Coales praised the partnership.

“The Shire is proud to partner with the Friends of Brickwood Reserve to safeguard this unique ecosystem for future generations,” he said.

The Shire actively supports the reserve by addressing issues like erosion, bulk rubbish dumping, and fence damage, alongside implementing a long-term management plan to guide the reserve’s protection efforts.

Residents interested in volunteering can contact the Shire on 9526 1111.
