Shire calls on major political parties to commit funding to essential infrastructure ahead of State and Federal elections

With State and Federal elections in 2025, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is urging all political parties to commit to funding essential infrastructure for its rapidly growing community.

The Shire has been proud to recently partner with State Government on a number of infrastructure projects, receiving funding for upgrades to SJ Community Recreation Centre ($106,500), and Byford Skate Park ($800,000), a new bike pump track in Byford ($1.34 million) and $22 million for the first stage of the Keirnan Park Recreation Precinct.

However, recent statistics from the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) reveal that the Shire lags behind other local governments in greater Perth, ranking last for access to community and sport infrastructure, despite being a key growth area.

According to NGAA’s ‘From Deficit to Equity’ report, the Shire’s community and sport liveability score is a mere 0.2 out of 3, highlighting the urgent need for investment in essential facilities.

The report calls on governments to prioritise funding to address infrastructure deficits that leave growth areas with 68% less access to sport and leisure facilities compared to inner metropolitan areas of the wider Perth region.

To bridge this gap and improve liveability for current and future residents, the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale is advocating for funding for key infrastructure projects, including:

  • Redevelopment of the SJ Community Recreation Centre in Byford: This project will deliver
competition-grade basketball courts, futsal facilities, and modern changing rooms.
  • Expansion of the Keirnan Park Recreation Precinct in Mundijong: This includes the
    construction of much-needed netball courts.
  • Relocation of the BMX track: Currently situated in Byford, the track will be moved to a new
    site at Keirnan Park.

Securing funding for these projects is crucial to supporting the Shire’s growth and ensuring the provision of essential community infrastructure. For more information on the Shire’s advocacy projects, visit: https://www.sjshire.wa.gov.au/our-shire/advocacy-2025
