Efforts to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity between Mundijong and Whitby are advancing, with construction of a new, gated pedestrian crossing over the Keirnan Street rail line scheduled to begin on December 9. The crossing will benefit residents travelling between Whitby and the Mundijong town centre via the key link between the South Western Highway and Soldiers Road.
The need for this crossing has become increasingly apparent since the development of the Whitby area began in 2015, which drove significant population growth to the Shire. Despite the area's expansion, no designated pedestrian crossing existed on the east side of Keirnan Street and Soldiers Road, prompting a number of requests from the community for improved infrastructure.
The project includes the construction of a new pedestrian maze over the rail line, designed to guide pedestrians safely across, along with a temporary footpath to ensure safe access during the works. These improvements aim to enhance pedestrian safety and convenience for residents.
The Shire has collaborated with Main Roads WA, ARC Infrastructure, and the Public Transport Authority (PTA) to make this project a reality. Through these efforts, the Shire secured $350,000 in funding from Main Roads WA for the crossing’s design and construction. Enviro Infrastructure, the appointed contractor, will mobilise on 9 December, with the civil works component of the project expected to be completed by 20 December.
This project represents a significant step in improving pedestrian safety and connectivity for the growing Whitby community. The Shire remains committed to addressing local infrastructure needs and ensuring safer pathways for residents.
