Let’s Talk Rubbish: Community input needed on the future of waste services in the Shire

Published on Friday, 4 October 2024 at 12:25:14 PM

Waste has been a hot topic in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale since the forced closure of the Watkins Road Waste and Recycling Transfer Station (WTS) in October last year.

Now, Shire residents will have the chance to have their say on the future of SJ’s waste services with a new community engagement campaign, “Let’s Talk Rubbish.”

Through the campaign, residents can help shape long-term waste management solutions that best meet the needs of SJ’s rapidly growing community.

Residents are encouraged to provide feedback on several key areas, including the continuation of bookable hard waste collection, scheduled verge-side green waste services, and the potential reopening of the WTS.

The consultation comes as the Shire reviews recommendations from consultants, which suggest significant investment—estimated at around $8 million—would be required to remediate and redesign the WTS.

Community engagement runs from Friday, 4 October, until Monday, 18 November 2024, with independent research firm Metrix analysing the results.

Their findings will inform future decisions on waste services, with a final report expected to be presented to Council in February 2025.

Shire President Rob Coales said he encouraged all residents and ratepayers to get involved.

"We know that some Shire residents have been asking for the reopening of the Waste Transfer Station," President Coales said.

“However, as these costs would directly impact ratepayers, it’s crucial that the community’s voice is heard to guide Council’s decisions.”
