Providing vital community infrastructure and delivering a range of events are among the key priorities addressed in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s 2023/24 Annual Budget.

Council adopted the Budget for the new financial year at a meeting on 31 July 2023, with a large focus placed on securing fundamental services as Serpentine Jarrahdale continues to experience rapid population growth.

The 2023/24 Budget has been prepared with a 6% increase to all differential rating categories.

Shire President Cr Michelle Rich said it was crucial the Budget struck a balance between delivering positive community outcomes and recognising the cost-of-living hardship impacting households.

“Like our ratepayers, the Shire has faced increasing costs such as electricity, fuel, construction costs and building materials as we seek to provide the fundamental services and amenity our community expects from us every day,” Cr Rich said.

“Council has worked hard to identify potential savings and efficiencies in this year’s Budget, as well as securing external grant funding where possible, to ensure the Shire can continue to deliver positive outcomes for our community.”

The 2023/24 Budget includes:

  • $8.24 million to upgrade local roads
  • $194,000 to upgrade the Shire’s Youth Centre
  • $410,000 to deliver grants programs and community events
  • $200,000 to revitalise local playgrounds
  • $6.82 million to maintain local parks, ovals and gardens
  • $1.9 million to fund Emergency Services and disaster prevention
  • $2.4 million to develop the future Oakford Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade Station

Cr Rich said the Budget addressed the key priorities identified by SJ locals during the Shire’s Community Perceptions Survey campaign in 2022.

“During our survey, SJ locals told us they need a safer roads network, improved parks and playgrounds and a variety of local events,” Cr Rich said.

“This Budget delivers on those priorities while supporting a connected and thriving Serpentine Jarrahdale.”
