Margaret Ward was recognised as a part of the Shire’s Volunteer Recognition Program for her hard work with the Byford Day Weightwatchers. Margaret received a $100 voucher to a restaurant of her choice located within the Shire.
We asked Margaret a few questions about her experience volunteering:
How did you get involved volunteering for your group?
I first got involved in volunteering in 2004 after a horse riding accident in which my horse fell on me and I broke my leg in three places. As a result of that accident, I put on weight and went to the Byford Daytime Weightwatchers. I met a lovely group of people and before too long I was secretary of the club. I have held various positions in the club for the past 16 years, and I am currently President. We are a very friendly club and it is not all serious weight loss and can often be seen at the Byford Bakery enjoying a cuppa.
How long have you been involved in volunteering?
Volunteering has also led to me being a member and subsequent leader of the Byford Probus Club and the SJ Seniors Group and I have met so many interesting people and have learned so much over the past 16 years.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering?
The monthly outings enable the clubs to meet outside of the meetings and enjoy time together and also visit interesting and informative places. I have also organised the guest speakers over the past five years and this has brought enrichment and enjoyment to the club members.
What makes your group special to you?
I have made lifelong friendships and have a lot of fun and fellowship.
Why would you recommend others to get involved in volunteering?
I certainly recommend volunteering to people who have some time to give to others and the reward they get will more than outweigh the effort they have to put in..
The Byford Day Weightwatchers meet Thursday mornings at the Briggs Pavilion. If you would like to know more about the group or are interested in joining, contact Margaret Ward on 0409 085 531.
