2019 Volunteer Recognition Program winner.
John and Lyn Visser were recognised in March 2019 for their hard work with the Riding for the Disabled Oakford Club. John and Lyn received a $100 voucher to a restaurant of his choice located within the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale.
We asked John and Lyn a few questions about experience volunteering:
How did you get involved volunteering for your club/group?
We got involved when our grandson started going to RDA. They were asking for volunteers so we decided to do our bit to help out and we have been there ever since.
How long have you been involved in volunteering?
I can't remember when we started , it is about 13 or 14 years ago . Initially we were just doing horse walking, either leading the horse or sidewalking and helping the riders performing their tasks. About 4 or 5 years ago we also started looking after the property. We planted many trees and shrubs, most of which were donated .We had to spend a fair bit of time watering them especially over summer and it has paid off with many plants now thriving without the extra watering.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering?
We love seeing the smiles on the faces of the riders .They really enjoy the horse riding . I think it is the highlight of their day. We also enjoy keeping the place looking nice.
What makes your club/group special to you?
The people you meet here are all people who are keen to help others who are less fortunate than ourselves and are great to work with.
Why would you recommend others to get involved in volunteering?
You bet. It is very satisfying.
