We’re excited to announce the commencement of significant upgrades to two key roads—Nicholson Road and the Karnup Road and Richardson Street roundabout—under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program. This government-funded program aims to reduce crashes and improve road safety on 'black spot' roads where crashes are known to occur or are at risk of occurring.
Karnup Road and Richardson Street Roundabout Upgrade
At an Ordinary Council Meeting in late 2024, WCP Civil was awarded the contract to upgrade the Karnup Road and Richardson Street roundabout following a competitive tender process. This intersection has seen multiple crashes and six major property damage incidents, often caused by speeding at the approaches to the roundabout.
WCP Civil will be carrying out the works which are scheduled to commence on Wednesday, 22 January and expected to be completed by the end of March 2025. Road closures will be in effect from Monday to Friday between 7am and 7pm, with one approach closed at a time. Detours will be in place to manage traffic flow and local traffic will be able to drive in and out of their properties.
So what's being done?
- Pre-deflection treatments on three approaches (north, south, and east) to slow down vehicles.
- Improvements to street lighting, including upgrading one existing light and installing two new streetlights.
Nicholson Road Improvements
The Peters Way, Foxton Drive, and Blair Road and intersections on Nicholson Road will be undergoing important upgrades to improve safety.
Raubex Construction will be carrying out the works which are set to commence on Wednesday, 22 January (same day as Karnup/Richardson) and expected to be completed by the end of March. Detours and traffic management will be in place to direct road users.
So what's being done?
- Road widening on the intersections to create more room for turning vehicles
- Adding additional lanes
- Installing islands to increase the safety of vehicles and to allow safer turns
- Upgrading/installing street lighting
The Shire thanks all residents for their cooperation during these important roadworks. Together, we’re building a safer, more connected community.
