Local streetscapes will be transformed with 93 new trees and 1,386 understorey plants as a result of $27,282 funding from the Urban Greening Grants program.
The funding will improve the local environment by increasing biodiversity and creating cooler, healthier neighbourhoods.
Key projects include:
- Shadier streets: New trees will line Evans Way and Plaistowe Boulevard, providing much-needed shade and connecting vital habitats for local wildlife.
- Cooling down hot spots: Larsen Road, a known heat haven, will be revitalised with 40 new trees, creating a more comfortable environment for residents.
- New trees in existing rain gardens: Kannamit Crescent will flourish with 30 new trees and 1,386 native plants in the existing rain gardens. These rain gardens soak up stormwater, filter pollutants, and attract a diverse range of birds and insects.
- A greener Padra Turn: Ten additional trees will be planted along Padra Turn, further enhancing the local canopy and reducing heat island effects.
President Rob Coales said increasing canopy cover in Byford was critical.
"We’re excited to see Byford going green,” said President Rob Coales.
“This grant will enable us to significantly reduce heat and beautify our community," said Shire President Rob Coales.
"By planting trees and refurbishing rain gardens, we're taking steps to address climate change, and improve the overall health and wellbeing of our community."
The Urban Greening Grants Program is a partnership between the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and the WA Local Government Association.
This grant contributes to the Shire’s vision of creating a welcoming community where everyone feels at home.
